Hey There! I’m Alex

Founder, Engineer, Architect, Father, Husband, Nomad

I’m on a mission to help people reclaim their power. in work, in creativity, in life. I believe that freedom isn’t about doing whatever you want, but designing a path that truly fits you. This means breaking free from old rules, owning your work, and choosing how and where you do your best work.

Personal Updates

Between late night binges playing Phasmophobia, I’ve been doing a lot of “future work” lately. Thinking about Novatorius, Siren, and what it all means. How does it all connect to my beliefs, and my life, and what’s the purpose of all of it.

I’ve always had a sense of why, but it’s never been that clear. Just strong emotions, and a general “feeling”. A lot of my time has been working through articulating that stuff lately.

  • New Website, Who Dis?

My new site turns my personal website into a central hub, making it possible to view content I’ve published across the web. I’m so excited to finally have it up and running.

I Gave a WordPress Taxonomy an Expiration Date Using BerlinDB

I had one of my clients come to me with a fun challenge. They wanted to be able to “flag” a post, and have that flag automatically disappear on the site after a certain period of time. This post explores how I solved that problem for them.

  • I Built a RESTful Events Integration

I Built a RESTful Events Integration

I built a WordPress plugin for an agency that integrates a third party events API with WordPress. This plugin loads fast, and reduces the number of requests. This post talks about how I approached this small project.

Own Your Platform

I believe in the Fediverse, and the ideals of owing your platform.

I treat my personal site as a central hub, so you’ll find everything I post on this site. It’s just my way of trying to make the web a little more decentralized, and own my content.

I am pretty passionate about this idea, and I think you could do the same, too. If you’re willing to spend a little more time sharing your content in one more location, you can do it, too.

  • So blog is directly on the fediverse now! Moving forward this should auto-boost to my existing profile on Mastodon so I can still share with my followers there, but I no longer need to manually cross post. Still have to manually share on X, but one step at a time.

once @pfefferle makes progress on the migration from Mastodon, maybe I can completely switch off that account. Getting closer!

PS: I’m Using the booster plugin – going to share a PR soon to help with the stumbling points I had in using the plugin.

  • So I have some questions about the state of the fediverse on WordPress.

Is it possible to migrate my Mastodon’s followers/following to my WordPress site (assuming I’m using it as an ActivityPub source)

Is it possible to actually follow people and get some kind of feed, interacting with that account with other users?

I think the answer is still solidly “no” to both of those, but it would be good to get some context on how people are dealing with this today.

  • I know I shared this yesterday but it makes me so happy that videos can embed directly from shared links on my site now!
