Has anyone set up a way to authenticate with a WordPress account using a cryptocurrency wallet?

Can someone ELI5 exactly how crypto is expected to be used in a transactional manner when it seems like any transaction is $50 in gas fees? Isn’t the original purpose to actually use it as a decentralized currency?
