So crazy idea – what if #WordPress split up into flavors, kinda like how Linux has? Is there any reason why something like that is actually a good idea vs backcompat plugins like Classic Editor?

In the worst case scenario, WordPress won’t just evaporate overnight, and probably won’t at all. You will have time to pivot if you need to.

A possible alternative solution for those sites hosted at WP Engine. It might be possible to replicate the updater on the client side.
