I have had a passing interest in kites over the last decade, but it really ramped up when I went to the OBX one year. They have a few great kite stores there, and obviously Kitty Hawk has great wind, and I just fell in love with the sport. It can be relaxing, almost zen-like, or it can be an adrenaline filled workout depending on what you put in the air, and what the wind conditions are like. What started as an idle curiosity has turned into a passion. I own a dozen or so kites at this point, and have even started 3D printing custom parts for some of them. I fly often enough that I’ve been caught in the local newspaper for flying around, and have kinda become “the kite guy” in my local community. I always have a few kites in my truck “just in-case”.

I can’t wait to fly this thing! It’s SO light, and delicate, but it’s rated at 0-15MPH wind speeds. I love my Quantum but it’s really hard to keep that thing in the air at those speeds. If you had short enough lines, you could fly this in a gymnasium.

I was at the Outer Banks last month, and while I was there I got to test out this really cool GoPro kite mount prototype I designed. It worked really well, but I am just now getting around to uploading the video for it. I’ll end up doing an actual post of this project in its entirety soon, but for now, here’s the video.

    SO FREAKING COOL, RIGHT?!

IT FREAKING WORKED! I had to make a single minor adjustment – the clip didn’t pinch hard enough. Nothing a cotter pin couldn’t fix! I’ll upload the video soon, but it is really…REALLY stable. I’m positively thrilled by the result!

I have the prototype for the kite mount assembled. Can’t wait to give this thing a try this weekend while we’re in the Outer Banks!

We visited Cavendish Beach, a site that was suggested to us by a local. She referred to it as “cavy”, and asked her co worker what she thought of the recommendation with an “eh?”

Cavy creates this beautiful gradation from blue to red as the water hits the red soil on the coast.

I practiced my kite stalls, barefoot on the beach, while the kids played in the cold water. I love beach days!

We’re just arrived on Prince Edward Island, and I noticed it was windy when we parked. Excited, I go out and try to fly my kite, which of course is when the wind dies.

I miss the constant wind on the Outer Banks. I hear they do some kite surfing here though, so maybe I’ll have more luck on the beach. ????

I have finished the first iteration of the GoPro camera mount for my Delta kite. Can’t wait to get it printed and try it out!

Got the kite up to a full 500 feet with the camera attached but it was too wobbly to look good. I have some ideas on how I can stabilize it though. ????

Mounting My GoPro To My Kite – With Footage

I mounted a camera to my kite, flew the kite, and successfully got some cool sunset footage at my campground. This talks about the trial-and-error getting there. It shows the footage, too!

Welp, I just put my kite in the ocean for an unplanned swim, and broke one of the rods ????. Off to the kite store to get it fixed.
